“It was one of the greatest moments in my life and my career. It is absolutely amazing to be able to develop this vaccine and see the ability to prevent symptomatic disease with such high efficacy,” said Dr. Tal Zacks, Moderna’s chief medical officer.
Moderna said its vaccine appears to be 94.5% effective, according to preliminary data from the company’s still ongoing study. A week ago, competitor Pfizer Inc. announced its own COVID-19 vaccine appeared similarly effective — news that puts both companies on track to seek permission within weeks for emergency use in the U.S.
A vaccine can’t come fast enough, as virus cases topped 11 million in the U.S. over the weekend — 1 million of them recorded in just the past week. The pandemic has killed more than 1.3 million people worldwide, more than 245,000 of them in the U.S.
Still, if the Food and Drug Administration allows emergency use of Moderna’s or Pfizer’s candidates, there will be limited, rationed supplies before the end of the year. Both require people to get two shots, several weeks apart. Moderna expects to have about 20 million doses, earmarked for the U.S., by the end of 2020. Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech expect to have about 50 million doses globally by year’s end.
Moderna’s vaccine, created with the National Institutes of Health, is being studied in 30,000 volunteers who received either the real vaccination or a dummy shot. On Sunday, an independent monitoring board broke the code to examine 95 infections that were recorded starting two weeks after volunteers’ second dose — and discovered all but five illnesses occurred in participants who got the placebo.
Both Moderna’s shots and the Pfizer-BioNTech candidate are so-called mRNA vaccines, a brand-new technology. They aren’t made with the coronavirus itself, meaning there’s no chance anyone could catch it from the shots. Instead, the vaccine contains a piece of genetic code that trains the immune system to recognize the spiked protein on the surface of the virus.
The strong results were a surprise. Scientists have warned for months that any COVID-19 shot may be only as good as flu vaccines, which are about 50% effective.

Choti Diwali, or Naraka Chaturdashi, is the second day of the five-day Diwali festival. Choti Diwali is celebrated on the day after Dhanteras and before Diwali or Deepavali. Also known as Roop Chaturdashi or Chaudas, Choti Diwali is believed to be the day when Krishna, Satyabhama and Kali defeated the demon Narakasur. On this day, people worship Yamraj, the god of death, and light a diya outside their houses. In some parts of the country, paper effigies of Narakasur are burnt to symbolise the destruction of evil.
Choti Diwali or Chhoti Diwali is also a day for visiting friends and family, exchanging gifts and celebrating with your near and dear ones.

On the occasion of the fifth Ayurveda Day on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to dedicate two ayurveda institutes to the nation—Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), Jamnagar, and the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur. Both the institutes are the country’s premier institutions of ayurveda.
The former has been conferred the status of an Institution of National Importance (INI) by an Act of Parliament, and the latter has been deemed to be a university by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The Ministry of Ayush (ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, sidda and homoeopathy) has been observing Ayurveda Day since 2016 on the occasion of Dhanwantari Jayanti (Dhanteras). This year, it is on November 13.
In the wake of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) outbreak, the event will be observed largely on virtual platforms from 10.30am.

ITRA has 12 departments, three clinical laboratories and three research laboratories. It is also a leader in research work in traditional medicine, and presently, it is conducting 33 research projects. ITRA has been formed by conglomerating the cluster of four ayurveda institutes at Gujarat Ayurveda University campus, Jamnagar.
It is the first institute in the Ayush sector with the INI tag. With the upgraded status, ITRA will have autonomy to upgrade the standard of Ayurveda education by offering courses as per modern, international standards. Further, it will forge inter-disciplinary collaborations to give a contemporary thrust to ayurveda.
NIA got a shot in the arm with deemed-to-be-university (de novo category) status. NIA’s contribution to preserving, promoting and advancing authentic ayurveda in the last few decades has been significant.
Presently, NIA has 14 different departments. It runs numerous courses in Ayurveda from certificate to doctoral level and is a pioneer in research activities.
At present, it conducts 54 different research projects. With the conferring of the deemed-to-be-university tag, the national institute aims to become a state-of-the-art tertiary health care, education and research institute in ayurveda.
It’s World Kindness Day today, Friday the 13th. Wait, is that a joke? Friday the 13th?
Maybe it seems like there is no time to be kind. The world, however, seems to be crying out in pain. It’s hungry and war-torn, with icebergs melting, animals going extinct and a pandemic killing thousands of people daily.
There is time, I promise you. I see people risking their lives every day to care for sick people, stock our grocery stores, teach our children, and staff our polling places. Librarians are checking out books. That’s the living embodiment of kindness.
“Selfless acts of kindness don’t just help the person on the receiving end,” said psychologist Lisa Damour, author of “Untangled” and “Under Pressure” and co-host of the “Ask Lisa” podcast, via email.
“Research finds that altruistic behavior activates the very same regions in the brain that are enlivened by rewards or pleasurable experiences.
“Remarkably, helping others also causes the brain to release hormones and protein-like molecules, known as neuropeptides, that lower stress and anxiety levels. Here’s the bottom line: doing good is good for you.”
Here are 25 ways to be kind to yourself, your family and community, and the planet today or any day.
Be kind to yourself
1. Start with yourself. Yes, you’re at the top of this list. What is one simple thing you can do that fills you up? It may mean taking 15 minutes for a phone call with an old friend, shooting hoops or reading a book. It may be simply saying “yes” if someone offers to help.

2. Get moving. You don’t need to start a rigorous exercise program. You can start with walking or even a five-minute stress relief program, and then keep going.
3. Drink more water. It’s recommended that women drink 72 ounces of fluids per day and men 100 ounces. Why not try adding one more glass of water per day and increase that number as you can.
4. Drink less. Many people have been stress drinking their way through the pandemic — and it’s not a habit you want to stick around. Don’t wait for Dry January to lower your alcohol intake or take a break from drinking.

Make kindness a family value
6. Treat your sweetheart. Do something nice that makes your spouse happy — take a walk together, make their favorite dish or load the dishwasher the way they like it or take the kids away so they can have solo time — make a schedule, find a favorite wine, whatever is their love language. (And don’t forget your anniversary.)
7. Schedule teatime. Take time to make the family a restorative cup of tea or two. Frequent green tea drinkers were 21% less likely to develop depression over their lifetime than those who were nondrinkers, a 2018 study conducted in South Korea found.
8. Host a family dance party. Have a family dance party to all sorts of music (’70s, anyone?) and show the kids you can salsa or boogie or slide with the best of them.
9. Phone a relative. So many grandparents are missing their children and grandchildren, so why not call a relative? And if you miss someone, you can call them, too.
10. Heritage recipe hunt. Call the main chef in your family and ask her or him to walk you through a longtime family recipe. Then make it. If they claim you have to have a certain ingredient from the old country, ask for another recipe.
11. Talk to your children about race. Educating our children beyond their own identities will help them navigate the wider world in a thoughtful way. Start early with Ibram X. Kendi’s board book, “Antiracist Baby.” Middle school children may like the young adult version of “Born a Crime,” Comedy Central host Trevor Noah’s memoir of growing up in apartheid South Africa. Adults can dig into former Spelman College President Beverly Daniel Tatum’s classic, “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?”
Kindness in the community
12. Bake for a neighbor. My favorite neighbors stress bake and share their baked goods. Those last scones were so good, and scones go with tea (see above). There is still so much more to bake.
13. Communicate your gratitude. Handwritten letters have become a sort of lost art, but there is nothing like receiving a handwritten note that shows care, intention and the reasons why someone loves and appreciates you. Think of the colleagues, friends and family members you cherish and why, then let them know. The simple things often mean the most.
14. Grocery shop for someone who needs it. You may have neighbors who are housebound or could use a helping hand; food banks are seeing more people in need.
15. Hand out snack bags. Gather shelf-stable snacks, bottles of water, socks and wipes into bags to hand out to people who need them (be sure to do so safely from 6 feet away).
16. Support a local restaurant. Order a takeout meal this week from a local joint that needs your business.
17. Vote and register people to vote. If you live in the US state of Georgia, you have two (yes, two) runoff elections coming up, December 1 and January 5. If you don’t live in Georgia, you can still help register people to vote in your state.
Kindness for the Earth
18. Take a hike. Hiking any time of year is good for you and shows support for our parks and other public natural spaces. More than ever, we need nature.
19. Buy food from farmers. Shopping at your local farmers markets or direct from farmers supports local businesses growing good food.
20. Volunteer in a litter cleanup: Organize or join a community cleanup of a local beach or neighborhood park.
21. Reduce, reuse, recycle and compost. Even as single-use packaging might be piling up in your home — and eventually landfills — there are ways to reduce our footprint.
22. Turn off your lights. Just when you don’t need them. So many of us are working from home, and that’s quite the electric bill. Turning them off saves money and resources.
Three more things
23. Social distance. It’s OK to sometimes see people if you stay apart (6 feet at least). Lawn chairs spread around a firepit sounds good right about now.
24. Dress for the season and play outside. Whether you live where we’re heading into winter (so bundle up) or summer (shorts weather), experts say it’s good to get outside for our physical, mental and emotional health.
25. Wear a mask. It can be annoying or uncomfortable, but it signals to the world that you don’t want to get other people sick or possibly kill them, and new research shows it protects you, too.

New Delhi, Nov 12 (IANS) In a bid to recreate some festival fervour in the social distancing times, Google has created a virtual Diwali experience that everyone can be a part of — via a new Augmented Reality (AR) experience.
Google Arts & Culture has partnered with over 20 cultural heritage organisations to launch Diwali @Home.
“Striking images and immersive online stories weave a journey through the festival of lights, its legends and folklore, and dive into the sights, sounds and smells of an iconic festival,” the company said in a statement late on Wednesday.
“Decorate your space virtually with diyas (lamps), detonate virtual anar (firecrackers), for some explosive, playful fun, and watch how your space sparkles!”
The colours, food, festivities and nostalgia of Diwali are being shared through new online exhibitions from partner institutions including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Indian Museum, National Museum and many more.
“There’s also plenty of hands-on fun for families with an interactive Diwali colouring book. Find it with Google Search, simply by searching for “Diwali” on your phone”.

Will the OnePlus Watch be inspired by the Oppo Watch?Oppo
The rollercoaster of 2020 tech news has produced one more unexpected turn: the rumoured OnePlus Watch won’t be powered by Google’s Wear OS.
The news comes from reliable OnePlus leaker Max Jambor, who tweeted this weekend that the new wearable won’t carry Google’s software. Jambor later confirmed to 9To5Google that it won’t even use a skinned or modified version of Wear OS.
If accurate, OnePlus is headed in an entirely new direction for its first smartwatch. There’s good reason or this, too. Not only is there plenty of space for a competing wearable OS (in a way there isn’t for a new smartphone OS), it also means OnePlus can have the freedom to build the watch experience from the ground up, without being constrained by Google’s struggling platform.
The features offered by Samsung’s Tizen-powered Galaxy Watch 3 and Apple’s Watch OS-powered Apple Watch far outstrip what’s on offer from Android-based wearables. Features like fall detection, comprehensive and in-depth health and fitness monitoring and extreme stuff – like blood oxygen sensors – aren’t widely available on Wear OS devices, if at all. I remain sceptical about how much a smartwatch can or should do, but the simple reality is that Apple and Samsung are pushing the industry forward and offering value for money based solely on an endless roll-call of new features.
The question is: which way will the OnePlus Watch go? The closely-aligned Oppo Watch is a high-end Android wearable that *ahem* borrowed some design inspiration from the Apple Watch. Whereas OnePlus products in 2020 have leaned toward being affordable instead of expensive powerhouses. The Chinese company’s other wearable, the OnePlus Buds, undercut rivals headphones from Google, Samsung and Apple.
I suspect the new watch will follow OnePlus’ recent switch to cheaper products and dramatically undercut the competition. Especially in light of the current difficult economic circumstances. That might mean the device doesn’t pack high-end features like an ECG test or blood oxygen monitoring. But the move to using its own OS means we’ll almost certainly see some unique OnePlus-style abilities. I suspect most of the OnePlus Watch’s appeal will come from how it interacts with other OnePlus ecosystem devices.
The Chinese company has been quite open about its plans to build a connected suite of products, including TVs, headphones, a range of phones and now a watch. I can imagine, for example, a OnePlus Watch being used as a remote for your OnePlus TV with more in-depth controls. Or, perhaps, real-time exercise coaching delivered via the OnePlus Buds, similar to what Apple’s next AirPods will do. This will be at the core of the OnePlus Watch OS, alongside a highly competitive price.
We’ll have to see what the Chinese company brings to the wearables table when the watch launches, which is rumoured to be next year. I’m confident the company will have a significant presence in the wearables market and create some space for itself by directly challenging Apple and Samsung in a way Wear OS watches haven’t.
